Spirituality and stuff

I come from a family that is very spiritual. Not really spiritual myself, I believe it’s just useless and like to focus on my work instead. I’m curious to know what you guys think about spirituality and if it has a place in your life and how has it helped you guys by incorporating or staying away from it.

What kind of spirituality are we talking here, new age Hare Krishna whatever hippie stuff or Desert Fathers Christian mysticism a la Anthony the Great, or something else entirely?

tbh lately I've been exploring early Christian mysticism practices, both in the Catholic and Orthodox traditions from a prayer and meditation perspective. There's a lot of literature I still need to read, but I'm really interested in the history of it all. The Cloud of Unknowing is a book written by an anonymous monk from the 14th century that has been really eye-opening and calming, Sayings of the Desert Fathers is something I want to tackle next. I get that Christian dogma as prescribed through the various denominations can feel very restrictive to non-Christians, but I feel like the spiritual element is actually pretty universal, easy to access, and isn't intimidating at all. Its foundations are somewhat similar to Buddhist spiritual practices/traditions, which was all the rage among new age people so it's kind of cool to see that there is a similar Western tradition that seems largely forgotten.

Edit: I know Isaiah_53_5 💎🙌💎🙌💎 has read a good amount of those historical writings so he has good recommendations for anyone that's interested.

What hit me hard in HS was Pascal’s Wager. To act like there is no God is making a bet on eternity. We might as well act like God exists.

If there is no higher power (and that’s a possibility) then our entire civilization’s foundations completely collapse. The very premise of the American system is that immutable rights exist because they come from God. It’s a pretty bleak outlook if our laws come from the whims of man rather than a moral foundation of an immutable God—that’s how you get the atheists murdering 100 million people in 79 years in the name of communism, an atheist ideology. The reality is, every evil is completely justifiable in a world without a higher authority. A world where humans are nothing more than meat puppets in search of maximum pleasure before we return to the soil will almost certainly lead to a society in despair.

None of that is an argument for the truth of the supernatural, just that a society that rejects the supernatural will inevitably quit procreating, will engage in suicide and drug abuse at enormous levels, will quit innovating, and will probably murder and enslave the multitudes.

I fairly agree with you but at the moment china is a Godless society and they seem to be winning the race against the US particularly in artificial super intelligence, which is a more God fearing society. Do you think it is only a matter of time before China implodes.

I like how you answer questions.

I guess I don’t agree with the premise that China is doing fine. Mao murdered 40 million Chinese people with no moral qualms and is still celebrated in China. The Chinese people are doing ok economically, but 1 billion people live in a mental prison. Like the secular West, I don’t see the atheistic Chinese system standing the test of time. The instant a little bit of freedom is granted Christianity will sweep through China, it will become a religious country and new generations will secularize and collapse the society and repeat.

I am spiritual to the extent that I believe that a higher power can guide me through whatever I put my mind to so long as I do the work. I've always believed in the premise of luck and that luck favors those who seek success in whatever it is as long as folks are shaping the outcomes they want to the best of their abilities. So whether or not we have actual spirits guiding us to greatness or whatever is a moot point but I certainly believe that when we do our best to shape our own luck, we are better poised to get what we are striving for. And to that extent I am a little spiritual given that I believe that with the work comes a degree or influence of some other force which helps us cross over that edge which we strive for. However, I do not believe in the negative side of spirituality in that I don't think that misbehaving in whatever way you define it or deviating from a "good" path will lead to some outer force making things worse for you. Take that as you will.

To me, spirituality, if at all, should be used as a tool for success, rather than a moral compass type of guide. It's basically, to me, an encouraging factor in forming my belief that your strife towards something will be supported by something bigger and help make things as they should be based on how you perceive and endeavor towards whatever it is. Hopefully that makes sense.

Spirituality is not the same as religion. The former could possibly give you a more peaceful mind but without the fanaticism the latter tends to breed.
