Starting a business while working full-time

Hey everyone,

I work full-time at a strong consulting shop (60-65 hrs on average). I want to do a start-up in my limited free time though. I want to have a product manufactured and sold primarily online. I wanted to get advice from people who may have tried to do something similar or any advice?

And also establish a sales/revenue pipeline.

Doing this right now. Job is 40 hours per week, which is even less than what I put in for school.

Starting a business out of school might be my easiest shot. Plus with my 40K signing bonus, I can afford to use $$$ to acquire customers.

Being broke and stressed in college blows.

Overtime can get heavy in times of war though...

*signing bonus plus relocation.

It’s not impossible because at places like FB, you work like 50-60 hour? And they get 75-100K signing bonus for returning after interning there.

Advice - don’t do it just because you want to be an “entrepreneur” or “own a business”. Starting a business fucking sucks. If you’re not pot committed or aren’t thinking about this “product” 24/7 then you’re getting into something that’s bound to be a time, energy, and money drain.

If you have an itch that you need to scratch then get a first run of your product and see what customers think. Do this before going balls deep and over investing in sales and marketing of a shit idea.

I don’t have much experience in CPG space but I’ve also heard the nightmares of finding suppliers and manufacturers. Don’t underestimate the importance of your supply chain.

As a founder you’re going to have to do all the work too. Design, logistics, financing, legal, marketing, sales, customer service, etc.

The BEST advice is to find a mentor, and network with other startups. It’s a lonely battle for the first couple years so do this sooner than later.

That being said, it’s all doable. Just a lot harder and a lot more work than you think.
