Can anyone recommend any literature on deception and lying? I have trouble with lying, but it's an important skill.

Check out Paul Eckman's work, although it is focused on detecting deceipion and lying in others. Not a how to be a great liar handbook.

Read the Prince. It's not lie-focused but you'll definitely acquire the mindset you're looking for. Just note that deception is short-sighted and should not be used in the context of long term endeavors.
