Technological Disruption and the Decline of College Bars

Ah, how technology is constantly changing our culture. It wasn't long ago when you had to plan events weeks or months in advance to get something accomplished. Nowadays, you'd be foolish to do such a thing. Moreover, now college bars are apparently beginning to feel the pinch of technology on their business model.

Students have spent so many hours pregaming (as in, getting as cost-efficiently drunk as possible, usually on hard liquor at a private party) that there is little need to waste money even on cut-price drinks, and they often don’t arrive at the bars until midnight or so, before the bars in Ithaca close at 1 a.m.

“Students don’t need bars to create a community the way they used to,” said Stephani Robson, a senior lecturer in the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell who specializes in restaurant psychology.

I can say, from a decent amount of experience, this is somewhat true. Though where I went to school I don't recall many cut rate drinks but more the kind of what the hell did I do last night bar tab. Regardless, I absolutely remember doing this before you would ever set foot in a bar. Checking who was there and what was going on, constantly weighing your options. I'd imagine this does wreak havoc on bars and how they operate.

Question I have is, what exactly can bars do about his? The obvious answer is just be that much more awesome with what you offer. No matter what if you have hot girls and a decent atmosphere you will end up with a lot of business. So does this push the old school hole in the wall bars out of business? Can they simply not cater to the differing tastes with the come and go, we want everything now attitude of the new generations of kids? I'll leave you with this quote.

“You could have this really amazing night, but if you didn’t get a picture, it’s like it didn’t happen,” said Ms. Parr, 22, a senior at Gettysburg, whose friends often order designer outfits from the Rent the Runway Web site because incessant documenting makes wearing anything more than twice taboo. “It’s crazy how much pictures consume our lives. Everyone knows how to pose and how to hold your arm and which way is most flattering, and everyone wants the picture taken with their phone.”

ithaca is a tough market, have experienced the college scene there and its so cosolidated and closes at 1am as mentioned that after parties and pregame parties at mansions are where its at, compare to other ny college atmosheres i.e bufflao (4am close time), much more sprawling and college housing is probably less % overall thus going to bars is more of a necessity to be sociable vs. house parties = sunday funday / thirsty thursdays

This may have someone more to do with the drinking age going from 18 to 21, rather than social media.

PS: Am I the only one who has thought about going back to one of these college towns once I'm rich, founding a fraternity, and slaying college girls into my 60's? Or maybe just give away a bunch of money to an existing fraternity, under the stipulation I will be known as "The Godfather" and I get first dibs on all sorostitutes.

I'm really not cut out for married life.... I foresee multiple divorces in my future.
