Tesla Battery Packs Power Hawaiian Island
Stumbled upon an article on CNBC that discussed how Tesla powers the island of Kauai after dark. Sounds impressive that they are able to provide power for an entire island (albeit a small one). Apparently Tesla has a total of 272 battery packs on the island and these help eliminate the cost of using diesel for power. Overall, this is just another part of Elon Musks rising empire. The scope of his business never ceases to amaze me. Also, this makes me wonder about analysts doubts on the ability for Tesla to succeed outside of cars.
While investors on Wall Street debate whether Tesla's ambitious transformation from electric car maker to sustainable energy company will pay off, its industrial power packs are already having an impact on at least one state.
In Hawaii, the Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is now drawing energy from 272 Tesla power packs to provide electricity after dark. While the island previously relied on solar and other renewable energy during the day, it had no way to store the sun's power after it went down.
Will Tesla's energy business continue to grow and will it end up being a success?
