I know that Kik and other similar texting apps often have PC versions, but will require that you download some software.

Gmail lets you send SMS messages via Gmail Chat.

Depending on your cellphone service provider and the provider of who you want to text with, most providers offer email-like addresses, where you simply type the 10-digit phone number before the @ symbol...

  • Alltel: @message.alltel.com (or @mms.alltelwireless.com for photos/vids)
  • AT&T: @text.att.net or @txt.att.net
  • Metro PCS: @metropcs.sms.us
  • Nextel: @messaging.nextel.com
  • Sprint: @messaging.sprintpcs.com
  • T-Mobile: @tmomail.net
  • Verizon: @vtext.com (or @vzwpix.com for photos/vids)
  • Virgin Mobile: @vtext.com

Will people see it coming from my number? And will I have access to all my contacts?

Honestly, I am not sure. It could likely vary from carrier to carrier. I have only a couple of friends that text from their computer to my phone and the texts come to me under the names I have them listed under in my contacts. I think a person would have to click on the hyper link of your name to see that it was sent from a phone number and not from an email address. Best suggestion I can make is have your wife or a friend send you a tester message or two and for you to do the same back before you decide.
