Platonists, Epicureans, Hedonists, Stoics, Aristoteleans—they all agreed—work is what your slaves do. A man without slaves is in no position to perfect the role of statesman or philosopher, the only truly worthy professions. Aristotle says, “All paid jobs absorb and degrade the mind”.
