The end of an era approaches... Yahoo will shoot the Messenger...

On July 17 2018, Yahoo Messenger shall be no more.

I can still remember using YM, one of the first of its kind [along with email, bulletin boards, ezboard and Yahoo boards] back in the early 2000's with my fellow RPGers to plot out our storylines in our online RPG world as well as just to chew the fat and "hang out" with these amazingly creative people, considering how spread out across the U.S. and the world we were. I feel very fortunate that I've gotten to meet a few of them in person over the years, having played tour guide for them and their families when they come to NY, having them host me/play tour guide for me when I visit their states, etc.

R.I.P. Yahoo Messenger... thanks for the good times!

That being said, I came across several articles this week while doing research on Yahoo and various online entities/web services and YM is now one of over 50 discontinued apps or companies that were purchased by Yahoo. Seems like a rather high rate of discontinuations and shut-downs under one single company umbrella - makes one wonder if maybe Yahoo bought them too late, mismanaged them, didn't give them the cash necessary to grow and enhance.

Also wonder if they invested in any successful apps over that time period. Understandable to have losers, as long as they're offset by handful of winners.
