The Gorilla in "A heavily populated East Asian Country's" Room

I remember reading about an australian internet upgrade scheme (costing mega billions), and companies were pitching for it. A company from this heavily populated east asian country (HPEAC) was banned from tendering for it, because they weren't to be trusted, since they had links with the military.

Recently saw today about a nuclear power project in the UK, involving a few companies, one of which from HPEAC, that fell through, probably wasnt the reason but it does lead to:

Would any company in their right mind have any of these high value services provided by a company from HPEA?. Are they destined to provide low value bulk goods until there is a change in this trust (which would only reasonably come from a regime change).

On the surface, the concept of companies coming in from that country seems great because the companies know how to put on a good show and tell people what they want to hear. When it comes down to it though, said companies can't deliver on their promises. It's much easier to cover up incompetence in a land where business and government dealings are as transparent as a brick wall, and the media and internet are filtered.

I think both sides are figuring out at the same time that its hard to pull off the same jig without the various protections afforded by the government at home. In addition these compares most definitely are on the prowl for know-how, technology, resources, etc. not just to be kept to enhance their own profits, but to be shared for the benefit of all of the organs of the motherland.

I think the trust factor will far and away be the biggest issue when it comes to dealing with such companies, because frankly you can't trust them. I have a fear though that other countries and companies outside the HPEAC will close their eyes and ears to this fact in exchange for a half-empty promise for a "fair" opportunity in the HPEAC's market. It's already happening.

I think change will not only require a new regime, but also the passing of a generation or two to purge the old ways.

This is completely insane and paranoid. You can say the word China for christ's sake.

It's neither insane, nor paranoid. This site is indeed inhabited by a number of $0.50ers. I post about the country fairly regularly, and there's always at least one bonehead with some borderline unintelligible ultra-nationalistic comment that isn't designed to lead to healthy debate, but rather devolve the conversation into an irrelevant pissing match.
