And new yorkers wonder why most Americans hate NYC. It's because of shit like this. People in NYC care more about money and material possessions than human life; they have no sense of decency or basic moral character.
You're very quick to judge. The fact is people laying in the street is very common (because they are crazy), and most people don't want to end up getting stabbed by some whacko waiting for someone to come by and touch him. I agree its sad, but don't generalize a whole city of people you idiot.
I saw what appeared to be dead people laying on the street almost every day in NYC, turns out they were homeless taking naps or going into crack withdrawal. You can't expect people to stop and inspect every homeless person they see on the street for bleeding.

As previously mentioned, people lying on the sidewalk is common in NYC. Did you notice how there was no blood on the ground to tell people that he was hurt or that he was anything more than a sleeping homeless man? Notice how after the one guy turned him over and noticed the blood the police were the next people to arrive. Unless you are the type of person to poke and talk to every homeless man you meet, you could of very easily been on of those people who walked by.
thank you OP, this post has changed my life forever. i now carry a stethoscope and thermometer with me as i walk to work and check every homeless person i pass for vital signs. it is the most rewarding thing to be able to take a few hours out of my hectic day as i ensure the approximately 27 homeless people i pass are alive and well. granted, i'm stabbed a few times each day with HIV-infected needles and smell like a concoction of piss and grain alcohol by the time i get to work, but it is such a small price to pay to help these people. i've even been able to record some of their irregular heartbeats due to decades of heroin and crack abuse and distribute the recordings to DJ's around new york. so the next time you're out at the club and your hear the DJ throwing down a sick beat, pat yourself on the back quantum, for you have made new york a better place for all of us
Baboon's wording is a little harsh and silly, borderline asinine but he does make a good point. The guy laying in the street was not homeless, he was a well-groomed Guatemalan. It would be a different story if that man had all the signs of homelessness: body/alchol odor, multiple layers of dirty clothing, etc. And let's be honest here, if we were talking about a white man laying on the ground in a suit, somebody would have frantically called 911 asap. All anyone had to do iwas call 911 and tell them someone is passed out on the sidewalk. Nobody said anything about playing Law &Order forensics and walking up to examine the guy.

I think its what he gathered from when he licked the guys choat and didn't taste anything out of the ordinary. Perhaps you're just too accustomed to the foul taste of homeless from-unda-cheese?
Lets face it, being homeless is a very dangerous lifestyle which most people lead because they are either mentally ill or have a pretty serious drug problem. Very few homeless people in NYC are just down on their luck temporarily homeless until they get back on their feet. One of the biggest risks you run when leading this lifestyle is that people are in general VERY skeptical of you and rightfully so. As a result, if you are visibly homeless, or even borderline scrappy looking, your run of the mid passerby is not very likely to stop and intervene if something is going on with you.
That being said, living in NYC you become accustomed to seeing some pretty crazy things. You see couples fighting sometimes physically, you see some crazy ass people doing crazy shit. I once saw 2 RR Phantoms parked on the side of the street with all their windows down bumping rap music and about 14 black guys on the sidewalk doing pull-ups on the scaffolding at 1AM. Its the sometimes funny downside of living in a city with so many different people and so much going on. And you learn to be very skeptical of random people and don't even notice things that would seem very strange in any other city. If I see a guy lying in the sidewalk in NYC like this guy was, I probably would have walked right by him. If I happened to be in Arlington, Virginia and saw the same exact man laying on the ground, I would be more likely to stop and see if hes ok. I've known more than one person who has been mugged/accosted in NYC and no one stopped to help. Because they just don't know what the situation is. It could very easily be a couple fighting.
