Touring cars are worse by the way as the 10 Year maintenance costs listed above are more like One Year or half-Year maintenance cost depending on how it is driven.

That is a handy chart when it is time to buy a new car. The last car I drove to the ground around 250,000 miles. I should have traded it in earlier I ended up getting scrap for it.
Not only would you own a Toyota, you'd own a 10-year-old Toyota. I can't imagine a worse car fate than that.

when you consider the reality that Lexus' are basically souped-up Toyotas then it makes sense.

It's still questionable. My Acura RL was just a pretentious Honda and its parts and repairs were regularly twice as much, if not more, than they would have been on a Honda Accord.
Definitely feel the bite when I go in for maintenance, but fulfilled a childhood dream of mine to buy a M3 (used / let some other person take the steep depreciation hit). I'll have the rest of my life to make more economical choices so not too concerned with saving $10k in maintenance costs over 10 years when I fulfilled a goal of mine.
Yeah, life is short. I feel like driving a crappy car to save a rather insignificant sum of money over the course of a lifetime is being "penny wise and pound foolish" with your life. That said, if you don't care that you look like a migrant worker driving your 10-year-old Honda Accord, then hey, more power to you.
Absolutely love my Audi, bought it new, but looking back I wish I had found a used one that was a year old. That being said, re-sale value is better than I thought it would be. Pre-paid my first 4 years of maintenance for like $1,200 or so. Unless something serious goes wrong, I'll be in a great spot - also can't imagine that I will be driving the same car in 6-7 years.
Personally am a fan of toyota since they are usually a little cheaper than honda but you definitely can't go wrong buying a Japanese car.
They don't overwork themselves at times to death for nothing!
Japanese have an indomitable Samurai spirit which is why Island hopping was a costly venture for us in WWII and we had to, as one of many reasons, resort to the use of Nuclear Weapons.
Just don't get one that has the stuck gas pedal...
Had a few Ford Explorers. They got pretty high on mileage, but the acronym "Fixed Or Repaired Daily" really held true.

No, no, no. $1,780/year in maintenance is just not that expensive to drive a quality car. Screw the notion of middle class clout, it's about having something that's comfortable, enjoyable to drive and simply feels good to own and cruise around in. I picked up a used 911 with relatively low mileage at a good price and haven't looked back... the feeling of blasting up the coast is unbeatable and worth every penny.
What year? About to do the same.

Amazed that Land Rover is not at the top. The reliability on those things are awful.
I think it broke the charts... Let me see if I can dig up the list for WSO dream car aspiring to let them have a good handle on those vehicles.
My parents have had two Range Rovers, the first was the a 1999 and made it to high miles but was a real dog by then because somewhere along the line we swamped it in Florida trying to pull their Jeep out on an off highway excursion. The second, a supercharged version has lasted about 10 years, is well over 100K miles now, and they've had relatively few problems. The Jaguar AJ-V8 under the hood has proven very reliable, unlike some of the motors Land Rover built with shitty tooling.
If you can do any of the tasks required by the careers discussed on this forum and can't change your own oil, air filters, belts (non-timing) and other basic maintenance... kill yourself... Unless you are making so much bank that it isn't worth your time in which case why are you worried about the maintenance on a BMW vs Lexus vs Land Rover?

Maintenance is not that hard. The difficult part of European autos is that they require specialized tools for more interesting work and some were not designed to be worked on by mere mortals with normal sized hands such as my A6 Quattro. The engine bay on that car was a total mess!
Having dexterity and being able to problem solve is a base requirement for Engineers and Engineers seem to make okay Bankers.
You only need to problem solve if you're hot rodding ;)
