Third Wheel at Networking events

Hi guys,
Hoping to get some advice here. I am fairly comfortable talking to people at conferences 1-on-1 but feel myself totally out of a conversation when there are three people or more.

I also find hard to break-in when my only contact at an event is already engaged in discussion with someone else. I just end up standing awkwardly or checking my phone 3000000 times.

Any advice would be appreciated.
