Thread: Resume DOs and DON'Ts

We all know the importance of having a well-polished resume. I know that there's a lot of content on WSO pertaining to resumes, but I wanted to make this thread to centralize some of the great tips that some have contributed. Feel free to post any great tips that you've heard, some things that you look for in a resume, or some general guidelines to make a resume stand out in the pile.

Thanks in advance and I hope that this post can serve as an excellent resource for college students and young professionals.

Unrelated, but when we were interviewing for a leadership position at my school's finance club, this one Russian chick turns in a resume and her cover page is a signed glamour shot photo of her.

This is going back years but we were hiring an admin or entry level marketing person and a resume came through Monster or Hotjobs (like I said, years ago) where the girl's only work experience was being a stripper in college. Her cover letter said something along the lines that if she could market and sell her body and put herself through college she could market anything. Unfortunately she just lived slightly too far away because she was getting the job.

Tip: if you're a stripper, put it on your resume.

What the recruiter/s frustrated old men who were getting blue balled by the wives?

ha, gotta love the russian chicks

there was one at fifa fanfest this past weekend taking money for kisses, basically like a kissing booth, hilarious

that's like.. technically prostitution?

That's like paying for herpes though...

Do guys out there kiss hookers? What's the SOP?

Do's: *Keep things short and sweet *Most important/recent things at the top *Keep format consistent

Don'ts: *Go over a page *Choose a colored text that is hard to read or at all.

I can only comment on the formatting. Take off the ranking, put professional experience on top. Try to give more information about your current job.

Hi Jon

When a plumber from Hoboken tells you he has a good feeling about a reverse iron condor spread on the Japanese Yen, you really have no choice. If you don’t do it to him, somebody else surely will. -Eddie B.

Given that you're a senior, you should just email every single person you can possibly find an email address for.

Just to give you an idea of the landscape, full time IB recruiting is basically over. Private equity probably isn't an option. Asset management might still be recruiting, I don't really know. Your best bet is regional firms and offices, aka Charlotte or Atlanta.
