Tips for dealing with physical impacts of stress

I'm about to sit online exams and since I'm pulling pretty long hours I've been really feeling the physical impacts of stress. Fortunately I've managed to keep the weight off but my hair is thinning out and I'm starting to look like a cancer patient. As soon as I wake up until I go to bed I have a constant tension headache and my skin looks terrible from spending the whole day indoors. I'm pretty desperate for tips on managing stress because I'm supposed to be starting this summer at GS and I can't imagine my life is about to get any less easier.

1) know that you are not alone and there are a lot of people struggling with similar issues 2) talk to a therapist or other licensed mental health professional - you may think you don’t have time, but your level of stress is likely compromising your productivity so working through it could actually save you time 3) consider what is environmental something you should address. For example, I was feeling really depressed and thought it was because of the extremely long hours of my job, and that it would t get better unless I fixe the underlying problem or lifestyle / job. I resisted taking antidepressants because I thought there’s nothing wrong with “me” and I shouldn’t have to take medication to do my job. I decided to give them a try and they made a material improvement in my life and allowed me to get back on track / manage my life. I still have long hours that can be draining, but I feel much more in control of my mood / mental health now.

Am a bit late to the game but recommend Rogaine for hair (and remember a transplant’s always an option).

Obviously this is just a bandaid over the actual situation, but sometimes finding a fix for the physical symptom can help with the cause (eg. less stress bc not worried about hair loss and how it looks, feel like you’re doing something to help yourself).

You don't need a therapist and you don't need medication. Medication is a last resort. You need to exercise, sunlight, good food, sleep, and and to develop social connections in real life. Your problems sound completely environmental.

This is a tipping point moment for you. If you get on psych meds now instead of exploring your health options, you're going to be a miserable zombie in a few years and there will be no going back.
