"In the area" emails work pretty well for arranging things like coffee/lunch meetings. For example, cold call or email someone at the firm you're interested in and say you'll be in the area interviewing at another firm, visiting, etc and ask if they're free to to discuss the role you're interested in. You have to be willing to travel for the opportunity, though.
I'd echo @Oxonian2017" and recommend sending an email or linkedin message to say you'd like to get coffee and do an informal/informational interview.
In my experience however, there is a huge geographic disadvantage. Use a local address and phone number if you can. Use Google Voice and forward it to your local number.
