Tokyo Marathon - trip ideas

Just got into the Tokyo Marathon that’s in early March 2024. Running the NYC marathon in Nov as well. Pumped all around.

Wanted to see if anyone who has spent time in or near Tokyo had ideas or thoughts to make a fun trip out of this - trying to convince some buddies to tag along, but need to convince them a bit with a plan.

Candidly not super familiar with what would be fun for mid 20s guys to do in or near Tokyo, but skiing would be a dope add on after some rest if that’d be at all feasible location wise. Open to traveling around and away from Tokyo as well

Looking for any thoughts / suggestions, thanks!

Have you ever run a spring marathon before? Training through the winter can be brutal. Just a heads up.

The best skiing in Japan is in January and by the end of March the season is pretty much winding down. A lot of resorts aren't open so if you want to ski I would try to find a way to squeeze it in before the marathon. The skiing there really is as fun as it is hyped up to be. The snow quality is incredible, the glades are great at Rusutsu, and getting off the slopes and eating a great bowl of ramen is a dream.

Check out Shinjuku Golden Gai for some really cool bars in Tokyo. It's a unique place.

Awesome thanks for the insight. And yeah… haven’t before and meant to put that in here as well since I’ll be doing one in November as well. Not sure if I’ll even want to get back into training again for March but just having a hard time passing it up haha

Congrats. What’s your 26.2 PR?

Have only done one full, had a hard time committing to the grind during my analyst stint but finding more time now as an associate. But I’ve done a number of halves. Honestly I just look to finish without hurting myself. Genuinely find long runs therapeutic and running has seriously kept me sane during some rough times, so I’ve kept in pretty consistent running shape since I graduated college ~4 years ago (played Bball in college as well so like to just keep in shape)

What about you? Any tips to longevity in running lol

I’m a big fan of flutter kicks. Lock out the knee, point the toes. It’s good for swimming, but also strengthens all the parts of the knees too, which is good for running, in addition to the core muscles activated. Your hip flexors are also trained, which is important for longer races.
