Unemployment rates rise across the globe; Brazil,Germany buck trend
US: 6.1% in September, up 1.4% from a year ago.
Canada: 6.1% in September, unchanged from 2 months ago.
UK: 5.75% in 3 months to August, a 10-year high. This was the biggest jump in umemployment in 17 years. Taking into account those who have given up on finding a job or unable to work for another reason, an incredible 20% of working age population is economically inactive.
Germany: 7.4% in September, down 0.2% from a month ago and down 1.1% from a year ago.
France: ft.com/cms/s/0/5cbf1ebc-8e87-11dd-9b46-0000779fd18c.html">7.2% in 2nd quarter, a 25-year low. However, in August the number of unemployed increased by 41,300, the largest increase in 15 years.
Sweden: 5.9% in September, 0.7% higher from just 1 month ago.
Italy: ft.com/cms/s/0/5cbf1ebc-8e87-11dd-9b46-0000779fd18c.html">6.8% in 2nd quarter, a 2-year high and up 0.2% from 1st quarter.
Spain: 11.3%, worst in Eurozone and probably highest since 1993.
Belgium: 11.2%, not far behind.
Eurozone: 7.5% in August, up 0.1% from July and up 0.4% since December 2007.
Turkey: 9.4% marking an increase of 0.4% since June 2008.
Japan: at a 2-year high of 4.2% in August and up 0.2% from July
Australia: 4.3% in September, up 0.2% from August.
Brazil: 7.6% in August, down 0.5% from July and down 1.9% from a year ago. It's also the lowest ever for the month of August.
I couldn't track down unemployment numbers for the other BRIC countries. Let us know if you find them.
