How would that be treason? Obama is not British and it is not his job as an American president to protect British interests. I am not a fan of his by a long stretch and this transaction is shady as hell, but telling someone else's secrets in order to get an agreement beneficial for the US of A, is definitely a lot better than not getting the agreement or getting it in exchange for something that's valuable to us.

This is certainly a hit on US' image abroad. If we're betraying our closest ally, how can other countries trust us?

On the other hand-what if this leak gives us a reason to stop providing that info to Russia? This could certainly feed the conspiracy theories that the US/UK are running Wikileaks.

A lot of cognitive dissonance in this thread that the bowing, kowtowing Obama was playing Realpolitik with the Ruskies and the British. New START was important to US interests and if an inconsequential secret about the UK's Trident force was a bargaining chip, so be it.

Besides, all the release of this "secret" did was verify information that is already available on Wikipedia:

It is global politics. Who knows what Russia put on the table. All I am saying is Julian is not releasing this information to the public to provide any benefit other than creating anarchy.

What is so funny is if Julian actually cared about democracy or freedom or whatever, he would be releasing Chinese, Russian, Iranian, African, etc documents. Let's shine a light on countries clearly violating human rights. But no, let's just release back door negotiations that are necessary and prudent in a complicated global environment.

I also think it is bullshit we back stabbed an ally like this, but if the info we gave Russia led to a decrease in nuclear weapons or a move towards stopping Iranian nuclear progression than I think the betrayal might be worth it.

@leverdarb - please tell me why this needs to be dug up? This is essentially none of our business. The average citizen is not having his rights violated. They are not being hurt by this behavior. The government is making deals on a global level. I didn't realize you had the right to know troop movements in Afghanistan or what the ambassador to Switzerland ate for lunch.

People love Julian for the same reason they love juicy gossip. Doesn't make what this guy is doing any better. People can revile in knowing that the USA told Russia some secretes. The USA now has to live with a less than friendly UK neighbor.

Also, on a practical side, is this even a worthwhile secret? The UK has nukes, but a small amount of them. They are no a significant nuclear power. Russia, USA, and China are serious nuclear powers. No news here, just gossip.

I agree with you that assange should be jailed and wikileaks should be banned since publishing of the diplomatic cables and alot of other stuff is indeed unneccessary and none of the publics business.

In this case however we are not talking about releasing some minor wrong doing, this is a MAJOR wrongdoing on the US part and as such is worth exposing.

Ok, I may sound like a douche for saying this, and I already mentioned that this is some underhanded shady shit BUT. While UK was a loyal ally, it hasn't exactly been the most useful. I mean Georgia is a loyal ally too, and why the f wouldn't they be with all the benefits they got without having to provide anything but loyalty in return? But unfortunately now is the time when we need a friend, not a trusty loyal pet fish or a dog equivalent. In that aspect Russia could be a lot more useful and thus more of an equal and a true friend than the UK.

Please inform me of what crime the USA broke in passing these secrets. I am not defending this behavior, but other than catching the USA pulling some bullshit, we haven't done anything that hasn't been done countless times before. This information does nothing but embarrass us. That is Julians real goal. He talks about freedom of information and being accountable, but in reality he just wants to see the shit hit the fan.

I 100% support transparency and accountability, but this is not what Wikileaks is doing.

Also, if anyone read the most recent businessweek, it talks about potential hacking by wikileaks to get their information. Apparently they posted blue prints of a missile defense the USA has. That is really relevant information. Julian is about making all of us unsafe, not more free.
