v day - anyone give a sh*t?

i've been living away from the states for a few years (Brazil) and they celebrate "Dia dos Namorados" (similar thing) on June 12th, so nothing going on this Saturday for me except the normal Carioca hunting.

So who's the romantic out there with big plans? who couldn't care less? who is being forced to do something by his/her significant other? what are the hot gifts this year? still roses and chocolate?

I'm doing the same thing I'd do any other weekend. It's free admission at the Shedd, bitches.

I kinda wish I were single so I could sit in the back and get drunk from a flask at 50 Shades tomorrow.

Also, that movie is available in IMAX..... what...

50 shades might be a great play for a single guy.

How so? Like in the actual theater?

My wife explained to our kids that Valentine's is a day for people who need help saying I love you to get a little push in that direction. I would have to agree. If you need V-day to help you tell somebody "I love you", then you don't understand relationships. It's a joke, and a reason for people in the US to spend some money. Maybe we should invent a holiday like "divorce day" and market it. Make it a day where people send black flowers and licorice to their ex. With a 50% divorce rate, it might be a hit...

Valentine's Day is pretty dumb, and I had two family members die tragically on that day a few years back so it's kind of sad for me, really, but I'll still take the girlfriend out for a nice dinner. Refusing to acknowledge it just to be different is pretty hipster.

Sad to hear that about your family. I'm very close to my cousin and her father passed away very unexpectedly on New Year's Eve, also her wedding anniversary. Terrible to have a holiday coincide with a tragic event.

I would never try to push that idea on someone I'm dating. It was more or less something that we both migrated to after dealing with the Valentine's hassle about 5 too many times.

It's a commercial holiday created by the greeting card industry to make money. Brilliant marketing.

I'm going to a MBA party tonight for singles. Aww yeahh!!!!!

A gift certificate for a massage or spa-like thing of some sort. Other than that, the keys to a woman's heart are flowers, chocolate, and coffee. Cliché, but true.

What's a good small gift you can get a bish that you've been dating for a short while...aside from jewelry, perfume, etc

Flowers are low risk and effective. Spa day at Bliss would also work. Stuff from Kiehl's....get one of the gay dudes to help you pick stuff out, ironically, they actually know best what women want. Something from some lingerie place could work if you know her size, that way you ensure you both get a present. The tricky part is if you guess the wrong size in either direction, you are asking for trouble. She'll either think that you think she's fat or she'll feel self-conscious for being fatter than you think....so, don't do that on second thought.

Ask for dimensions. Seriously, it's three numbers and anyone on this site can remember that. Girls know those three numbers like we know our shirt neck/sleeve/waist size :)

Or just get a toy, surveys say that chicks want a romantic dinner and something novel later on...

:D

I'd lean on the side of one thing traditional, like @"DickFuld"'s suggestion of flowers or a spa day, then find one pretty original thing based off her interests. Does she read? Get her a book she would like. If she's into wines, get her a decently priced monthly wine subscription. Even a cheaper rando gift that fits her interests would get her talking. Right now you are at the mercy of all the other girls she's friends with. V-day isn't just a holiday for you, it's a test.

I'm having a threesome this Valentine's Day with my hand and wrist.

Least it's guaranteed. That's more than most guys could say about their V-day hopes and dreams.

taking my girl to dublin for a weekend, watching the rugby in an irish bar, to soak up some atmosphere and then going to a few cute places i've found (i'm in London. she's german). Racking up serious brownie points for a 3way to come my direction on S&BJ day in a month.

V day doesnt mean anything BUT it gives mega bragging rights to your girl if you do it well.

and i thought this site would understand investing....

Was just thinking while in the store the other day...Hallmark must have some amazing margins....but then took a look at their 10k and it's nothing special. EPS is in the teens, I think. You'd think a business where you print a goddamn folded piece of card stock by the millions (per unit cost...I wonder), sell it for $4-5, and convince everyone in the world that they need to buy it to be happy would be a license to print money. Maybe not so much anymore.

Whelp, I spent three straight days on ecstasy and went to the ER for a severe case of blue balls. Second time I've had my testicles ultrasounded...

50 shades sucked dick and the sex was tame and the chick looked like a WWII nurse, in a bad way
