Very Lost. Is Applying Online a Waste of Time In My Case?
2nd year Community College student, I've done a search-fund/"private equity" internship at two different places. To be honest, I know search-fund internships are regarded as looked down on but for me, they've filled up my resume with something related to finance and I've been able to smoothly convey conversations about the work I did, and what I learned in interviews which they seem impressed by...I think (still waiting to hear back from one bank).
Anyways, there's nothing finance in my city except for some small wealth-management, and asset management shops near me. I've pretty much been applying to any and everything finance related that's out of state (corporate finance, commercial banking, risk management, etc) that all got trashed right away. I tried networking with smaller branches/shops near me but none of them take interns. Really not sure what to do from here (yes, I'm transferring colleges but really want to line something up this Summer IF I had the chance of doing so). I've thought about printing some resumes, and just walking in to some of these places and introducing myself but that seems kind of laughable.
There is one boutique investment-bank near me. I know it's a long-shot but is there a good way to reach out from where I'm at right now? I usually have a hard time striking a balance being straightforward in the e-mail talking about how I'm seeking an internship opportunity, brief background, attaching my resume versus going the long route with setting up informational interviews.
Are you already accepted into a college that you're transferring to? May be worth updating your resume to include that school and "Expected Start: [Month] 2019" at the top of your Education section. Similar to when I was looking for pre-MBA internships I put something like "Incoming MBA Student at XYZ" on resume and LinkedIn.
I would emphasize your broader plans to start at CC and then transfer colleges, and build up your career in finance, etc. If you can get in front of a real person (not online or HR) that story should click with someone that will give you a chance. Try to get into something finance related. IB may be several steps down the road, who knows.
My personal path after I totally fucked my GPA in freshman year of UG included literally Retail Bank Teller (Freshman) -> PWM intern (Sophomore summer, unpaid, I also literally printed resumes and went door to door in a Jos A Bank suit getting rejected until someone took a chance) -> Asset Management Marketing Analyst (Junior Summer) -> Study Abroad (Senior Summer) -> Boutique Consulting (tiny shop w/ 10 people, first job out of UG, spent 1 year here) -> Big 4 Transaction Services (networked, spent 3-4 years here) -> Full Time MBA (Top 15) -> BB IBD (satellite office). It was a 12 year grind to get to IB from where I started out.
Would like to highlight that HR is not a real person.
Is this referencing to stuff like HireVue that’s around now?
my GF is pretty senior and interviews people (college juniors and seniors) via HireVue for a large firm mentioned on this site pretty often...we watch the interviews together (its a fun activity...we've done over a hundred of these). Most college kids are HORRIBLE at these interviews. Unprofessional, don't know how to behave, don't understand whats a relevant story vs what is NOT, dressed slovenly, hard to understand when they talk, the list just goes on and on. Its so freaking obvious when they are really really immature, vs when they have their shit together. 90% do not have their shit together, and it shows. It abso-fucking-lutely shows in these video interviews. Know how to have a god damn personality, and still be professional. Please for the love of god.
On the plus side, if you are not one of those people who bomb these interviews, its very easy to get passed on to the next round.
