Are you into sampling, especially in hip-hop and R&B? When I was in high school, I would dig through all the $1-bins and look for records with samples I recognized (naturally, tons of 70s R&B and soul). June 12 is "Record Store Day," and usually comes with some good deals. A place in my town marked all the $1 records down to 25 cents, so I spent like $5 and walked out with around 20 records. I have a few hundred records that are practically worthless, but are cool to me because they contain obscure samples that I take pride in knowing about. Right now, I only own a handful of new records that are actually worth anything, but I'll probably start collecting more seriously once I start working full-time.

I wouldn't worry about any "best practices." Just buy what you want - music you like, artists you respect, or even something with cool cover art that catches your eye; I definitely plan on decorating my place with records once I get settled in

I've gotten into it a lot since the pandemic.

My father in law kept a lot of his old records, some really legit albums that cost a fortune (relatively), so we took those. My father threw his out a while ago, so no luck there.

Honestly, I've found that Amazon has been really helpful if you know what you want. I haven't actually gone into any of the record shops and browsed, but that might be a worthwhile avenue as well.

Check out Discogs. I got a couple of used (like new, good condition, etc) records from them and they were all fine

Nothing is true; everything is permitted.

Talk to your older relatives and see if they have any that they don't want. I love records because I can listen to music I would not otherwise hear. I don't really buy records for stuff I already know and like--I get stuff I don't know so I can experience it for the first time. It's so much fun. Also going to local record stores is a good time. Just buy shit that looks interesting. Some of my favorite songs were from records by groups I didn't even know about (or knew but never listened to).

Dayman?

Half Price Books was great when I was into it for a bit. Snagged some awesome Grateful Dead albums, including the entire Europe '72 set, at really solid prices.
