Vivek killed it in the debates.
I'll be honest. I never took him seriously before tonight, but he blew my expectations out of the water. Vivek was the clear winner of the debates.
DeSantis and Pence were a bit underwhelming. Christie shined today, but not well enough to win the nomination. Everyone else was forgettable.
Thoughts?
I don't have TV but followed the comments on Twitter. People's totally different interpretations is what I find completely bizarre. A ton of people said Vivek was atrocious and very unlikeable and taking vicious body shots and was the clear loser in the debate. But some people said he killed it. This is why eye-witness testimony is just the worst evidence in a criminal trial.
Have to agree- Vivek comes across as an extremist, which clearly appeals to a very small segment of the population.
He has charisma, but it's used with malintent.
Someone wake me up when RFK Jr. gets invited on a TV debate. Until then, truly doesn’t matter
Overall I think Vivek had a strong night. He looked comfortable being the center of attention and got the most screen time which will help his campaign. No idea why he would directly associate himself with Obama using the skinny kid with a weird name line. Haley and Pence both had strong performances as well. De Santis’ performance was kinda a mixed bag and I don’t think he justified himself being the number 2 candidate. Tim Scott seemed to fly under the radar seemingly just trying to appear charismatic and not giving or taking many blows. This will suit him well if he’s really trying to be Trump’s VP pick as some speculate. Christie did pretty well with what he wants to accomplish but I doubt his views are going to gain enough traction to be a player later on. Hutchinson and Burgum both didn’t justify their presence with Christie being the stronger anti trump candidate and Burgum looking visually uncomfortable when speaking. After seeing the debate I think it may have actually been smart for trump to skip the debate considering that theres no reason for him to get berated by christie and hutchinson when he can just show up later when they are out of the picture. I don’t think his base would mind but theres no reason for him to create 10 christie sound bits to play during the general election.
In fairness Burgum was dealing with a torn Achilles. I noticed his awkwardness too and was wondering how much of that is from trying to manage a torn Achilles without using too many PKs to fuck your head up for the debate.
Not that he has a shot either way. He was cute though, with the small town farmer comments.
Vivek has been solid, he is doing every podcast and media channel it seems, and holds his own, even at relatively hostile venues like CNN. I think he is by far the most intelligent of the bunch. He is also smart on the abortion issue, which seems to be kryptonite for most republicans looking at general electability. I think the abortion stuff is gonna screw Desanctis in the general elections. he also misses charisma and he is running a disastrous campaign.I can't take Christie seriously, he should be able to manage his obesity . And on the Trump attacks, perhaps he some valid points but I think there are far more important issues to focus on.
I like Vivek but I think he is gonna have problems resonating with a big part of the republican base, the former ivy league hedge fund guy, perhaps a bit too much of a know it all. However he is running a great campaign, going everywhere. A year ago, nobody knew who he was, except for people who read his book woke inc like me. And now he is running second in certain polls. So who knows where he could end up.
I agree with this take. Vivek came out hot, and I think that's what you have to do in these cases for a largely unknown non-politician. He made some good points, although personally I do agree with Christie in principle that the Republican Party has to get over Trump already, but that's easier said than done and is the responsibility of both these candidates to prove they're better and the electorate to finally look past him. That being said, I was very underwhelmed by DeSantis who I really want to like but he is proving to be a very generic individual with no personality, unlike Vivek. I'm personally no fan of Florida (insane humidity, don't like tropical places, suburban hellscape, etc.), but I do recognize that it's not easy to govern a large place like it that's experiencing a lot of growth, so I do have to credit him for that. We'll see.
Vivek pushed it a bit too far, I didn't get him licking his finger and came across as a bit of a smartass, but he still won. Nikki Hayley couldn't read the room and her and Pence wailing on about Ukraine have effectively ensured they have no hope in primary.
I don't know why Hutchinson bothered, total waste of time. Respectfully no one cares about Arkansas's computer science curriculum. Burgum also, he fell in line in most cases but still no reason for him to be at next debate.
Christie didn't attack Trump sufficiently and can't compete with Vivek or Ron as a dyed in the wool Republican.
Tim Scott wasn't even relevant enough to be attacked. His lines were stale and didn't make him stand out at all.
Another note, I like Reagan as much as the next guy but someone needs to make it clear that candidates aren't required to quote him every other sentence.
Imo next debate should be culled down to DeSantis, Vivek, Scott and either Christie or Hayley assuming Trump skips again. It's still DeSantis vs. Trump but the VP race is on.
Christie saying he sounded like Chat GPT was pretty funny, and after further thought seemed dumb considering the root of it maybe is that he’s just way more well spoken and articulate than the bunch
Actually, given that a lot of what he was saying was not true, but well phrased, does sound very close to ChatGPT output.
Lucky for Christie no one knows or likes Chat GPT!
I maintain the position that Christie doesn’t actually run to win, he solely exists to derail candidates. E.g. Robot Rubio
Nah. Vivek is so far up trump’s ass it’s ridiculous. Think for yourself. And calling climate change a hoax? Even the far right lobbyists in the crowd didn’t like that. He’s obviously just trying to appeal to the far far right. Not to mention the naivety of his response on letting Russia take Ukraine.
As much as I disagree with his stance on Ukraine I think being the only ardently anti Ukraine candidate on the stage is going to help him a lot. A very large portion of republican voters are anti Ukraine support even though as Haley pointed out only around 3 percent of our defense budget is effectively stopping Russia. I feel like we cant have a single bipartisan thought in this country. Vivek is definitely appealing to the if the Biden administration is doing it we must do the complete opposite crowd.
The war in Ukraine is so nuanced. I'm not so much opposed to the war as I am opposed to our insistence on complete Ukrainian victory that would restore all of its land back to pre-2014 levels. Total victory is a HIGHLY unlikely outcome and our insistence on this position is lengthening the war and leading to the destruction of hundreds of thousands of lives. But we're to the point where if you say, "Find a negotiated settlement and let's end this war" you're being accused of being pro-Putin, anti-American, etc.
It's not nuanced at all. An authoritarian, semi-feudal kleptocracy is trying to conquer a nation to which it has in the very recent past given ironclad assurances of territorial integrity. This isn't a "both sides" issue, it's either "you support the dictator or you support the right of people to self-determine their political destiny."
So, your argument is the Ukraine should roll over and give Russia what it wants so that American primary voters don't have to think about it? Lets be clear, Ukraine wants it's land back, it is not the US pushing for it. The Biden Administration is doing both the responsible and ethically correct thing, and letting the Ukrainians themselves dictate what their war aims are.
Again, you are framing this in a highly disingenuous way, which is hardly surprising. Russia doesn't want to end the war, because Putin's regime probably can't survive anything but a total victory. Ukraine doesn't want to end the war, for the obvious reason that meaningful parts of their territory are still in the hands of a dictator who is credibly accused to engaging in ethnic cleansing. You are trying to make it seem like the US is pushing for some unrealistic standard of victory for base political motives, when in reality the opposite is the truth.
Your pandering to a right wing dictator is kind of gross. If someone walked into your home and stole half your shit, or emptied out your bank account, and then threatened you at gunpoint to take the rest, you'd be pretty pissed if the police said "just let him have it, we don't want to escalate the violence."
You are a moron
This is the dumbest thing I’ve read all day
Personally, I felt Haley had the strongest performance. She wasn’t afraid of being a fiscal conservative and I think running on the economy come next year is a wise move. She came off as level-headed, stable, fairly mild when it came to abortion, not an isolationist… to me she’s the best thing that party has to offer at the moment.
Of course that means she’ll easily lose the primaries.
her bloodthirsty neocon ass makes my skin crawl. She's Dick Cheney in a skirt
Vivek is a clown, but plenty of dumb people will like his obvious charisma even though there's no real substance. I honestly think Haley would destroy Biden in an election, but it looks like it'll be Trump getting his ass handed to him again. I don't think the debate did anything to further anyone's position - no one did terribly and no one separated themselves from the pack.
Nikki Haley is easily the best general election candidate and would swamp Biden, in my opinion, easily taking massive amounts of centrists/conservative democrats away from Biden. She also neutralizes the GOP's abortion issue which will hurt in the General Election.
Sadly, because she is centrist and a good general election candidate, she stands no chance whatsoever with the retarded audience that is the GOP primary voters. It is insane watching these debates and watching guys like Trump/Vivek show their ass and display their ignorance, only to realize shortly after that the retards in the audience ate the stupidity up.
Does anyone realllllly think disbanding the FBI, CIA, DOJ, etc. is a good idea? The shit he says is just so stupid. Yes he says it in a witty/charming way, but it's conceptually retarded.
I dismissed the "disbanding the FBI, CIA, DOJ" comment since it's not practically feasible to follow through with. But I agree, it's not a good look for him.
Yes. Disband everything if you want real change for this country.
Vivek is awful, he looks and sounds coked up and it appears all he wants is to lick trumps rear to get the VP slot - not knowing that his annoying ass behavior will have him thrown out by Trump in a matter of days.
He is an embarrassment to himself and his “multi-ethnic” background that he tries to pander. He has no legislative wins, he comes off as a typical dipshit on wallstreet know it all.
We all know a young Indian guy on Wall Street like Vivek. Has an insecurity and has done years of work white-washing himself and taking cotillion classes but still has a constant need to try and prove himself to his peers when in a room with Americans. That's honestly what I get from Vivek, trying to be the "based Indian guy" kinda deal and it's just weak to me. Though he does deliver this schtick with high energy and charming youth, it's just another dumb schtick from a guy whose in it solely to win the approval in life that he feels he's never fully had from his peers.

Chris Christie missed a golden opportunity IMO. When my boy got that UFO question, he should've paused, looked calmly directly into the camera and said "If I were president, you would know the truth about UFOs." After a quick smile and "Vote Christie 2024," the crowd would've gone absolutely bonkers. What American doesn’t want to know about aliens 😂.
