Sure, experience abroad is always a positive. Make sure U can glorify some stories to make the interviewers believe your skills acquired can be applied at their firms after though.
It could be a negative, you'll have to very clearly explain why you did it and why you are now ready to settle down in banking. It is quite a transition from bringing water to a poor African village to spending 18 hours a day with excel. If you do volunteer in Africa, the interviewers will want to be confident you're not going to have a crisis of conscience midway through your internship/first-year/etc...
doesn't any recruiter ever think "hm, this guy spent a couple of months in africa in between semesters at Bschool... i wonder why..." and then just ignore said "experience"?
