Was Cannae or Austerlitz more iconic/better?
Decimating 1/3 of the Roman Republic's male population in a single battle smack dab in the midst of their core territory versus the most stunning and flawless victory in history by the greatest strategist in history?
Definitely Cannae, honorable mention goes to the French invasion of Russia and or the Persian and Greek Wars. The sheer genius of not even engaging the French by force, rather by nature is an amazing feat.
I mean it's a very generic and not particularly innovative strategy. Squatting there on the other side of inhospitable terrain waiting for your enemy to fuck themselves through attrition is a classic move.
Classic yet amazing
Battle of Tannenberg Line. 22,000 battle-weary and retreating Germans and Estonians smacked down 170,000 freshly-equipped Soviets, prevented a Soviet conquest of Finland, and bought more time for the evacuation of East Prussia.
And they pulled it off with sheer tenacity and repeated use of panzerschrecks.
