Watch What You Say! - Gossip That Got Someone Fired
My friend recently told me a crazy story about another intern from his IB Summer Internship at a top BB group, which got me thinking...
Have any of your colleagues—or even any of you monkeys—said anything that got them fired? I'm talking gossip and explicit stories that might have spread when they did not want it too.
For those that are interested, here is the story:
Male intern got overly comfortable and told a story to ONLY his SA class about how he is currently using his girlfriend and only dating her to build his network/business connections. Another intern (female) in the SA class then proceeded to repeat the story multiple times to full-time employees, and before long, the gossip had spread. The intern did not receive a return offer, and what he said may have been a factor in the decision. - My Friend
The way my friend made it out was that this intern was actually pretty good in the workplace. Despite this incident, he was technically sound (more than many of the other interns) and still got along with everyone in the workplace. It sounds like the cultural fit, as you mentioned, may have been a slight issue--nothing serious--but this incident was ultimately a determining factor (I suppose in regards to the true morals of this individual).
No matter how nice the guy may seem like, this is one of those things where your true character always comes out in the end. Just knowing this, I know I'd never want to work with him, and I imagine his group must have felt the same way.
How long before he 'uses' them or stabs them in the back? His moral compass is a tad broken
There is no shortage of technically competent, smart people looking to get a job on Wall Street. Someone as morally bankrupt as that intern is a potentially HUGE liability to whoever hires him. What if he starts sleeping with someone in his company after being hired full time for the same exact reasons? His skill set is entirely replaceable, like, 100% replaceable, by another person who in addition to being a decent human being, represents much less of a risk to an employer. The lady intern was right to spread that information; it helps her chances of getting an offer AND protects the firm from a massive potential liability.
Never Happened.
I'd say this is the type of person I defintiely wouldn't want to work with. I mean I get interns are young, but I don't think I'd even joke about something like that. It just shows bad taste imo
It's funny how quickly people get up on their high horses. I'm sure tons of kids do things way worse than this to get a leg up especially in such a competitive landscape.
Yeah I mean if the kid is an intern he's still in college - There are only a handful of people I know that had serious relationships in college, even in junior/senior year. Doubt it was that serious of a relationship anyways. Still a dick move, but not like he has been married for years with some kids and has a mistress or anything like that.
People who talk about this kind of stuff are the ones furthest away from actually doing it, they're just attention seekers.
Ruthless people (which tbh isn't really a good thing, as much geeky finance guys get off to Frank Underwood) don't talk about themselves, they're very good at blending in; and even they realize the importance of long term relationships in this business.
You won't simply screw other people to the top, I can guarantee that.
why does it matter if the guy says some stupid comment about his gf like that? it probably isn't even true, he was most likely just blowing off steam or trying to act like a big shot in front of his peers. that isn't what i would consider 'juicy' gossip, if someone said that about someone in my office i would probably zone out before they were halfway thru the story and have zero recollection.
