Westport HF commute
How bad is the commute to westport CT from NYC? Just graduated and have offer on hand from NYC based fund but also am in talks with a westport based fund. Wondering if people just live in CT? Would hate to give up NYC because of friends and already so many years spent there
It’s going to be a little over an hour from Grand Central. The commute is fairly popular though.
Also, it’s important to note how close the office is to the train station. Most of Fairfield county isn’t exactly walkable.
Can you lmk what’s the typical route to westport? Google maps shows me a 2 hour commute from grand central at best. I think the office is like 10 mins from the station
Well you could look it up on the MTA website. It shows about 75 minutes.
In terms of station to office, you say it’s 10 minutes. Is that walking time or driving time?
Depending on where in NYC you live, it could be a 1.5-2 hour total commute because you have to get to grand central a little early for the train, then the train takes 75 minutes or so and then a walk to the office.
Not sure how impacted these figures are due to corona...but looking at the MTRA website and times from Westport to Grand Central between 4pm - 9pm (good range of going home times), the travel time is 84 minutes. Even more important is the fact that they only have trains running once every hour. MD comes over to your desk for a "quick chat" that drags on and you miss the train? Too bad you're there for another hour. This gets old really, really quick. More heavily trafficked stops have better frequency of trains - White Plains and Stamford for example.
Thanks. Seems like it's too much. I also live in the village so the commute to grand central on top of the commute to westport doesn't really seem worth it tbh. Plus the fact that there's a train running once every hour too.
If it is Bridgewater there is also a shuttle from nyc to westport that they provide.
Westport daily is a real beating I’ve never done it but know plenty who tried
Maybe you can WFH 2 days a week?
Don't commute from Westport to NYC. It is simply too far for your mental/physical health. You also don't want to miss a train in Westport in the winters...you'll be waiting around in the cold for the next train, just terrible. The only way you can justify that commute is if you had a guaranteed remote work arrangement a couple days a week.
Eh a lot of people do it. You can justify it if you work in midtown walking distance from grand central and have a family but you need both for it to be worth it.
