What are my options with an Econ/Math major?
Hey everyone, I’m new to WSO. Didn’t think I’d ever be super interested in Finance, but I’ve switched my major to Econ/Math because I enjoy the quantitative and analytical disciplines of business, but didn’t like the Business major. What kind of jobs might I be looking at with that degree? I’ll also have added some programming skills (Python, SQL, R, and maybe MATLAB) by the time of graduate. Thanks in advance!
I majored in accounting and took many elective finance classes. If I could go back I'd either major in English or Math. Once you understand the business concepts, which aren't difficult to comprehend and almost entirely learned on the job (business strategies are custom to each company) the most important parts of being effective are math and writing. Social skills are important too but that doesn't play into the major discussion so much.
I'd say your options are not too limited..
Everyone at my school does the exact same, aiming for finance with business or accounting degrees, which I’d originally been enrolled in (business). It’s good to know that this is probably an even better decision, and I think I’ll be much better prepared for any jobs with a strong foundation in Econ and math. Thanks!

You can literally be anything with Economics or Mathematics, let alone with both and programming skills. What you need to do is find out what tasks you actually like doing. And find a career that is centered around that.
Well it’s great to know I can do just about anything then, everyone at my school takes the business route but I feel like I’d be much better prepared in the long term with upper level Econ and Math courses.
Honestly it won't really matter. When you're out of college, most of what you learned there isn't actually applicable in the real world. The most important part and biggest benefit of something like Econ/Math is it'll help adjust your worldview. That's the real secret. Developing the right mindset. Read Principles by Ray Dalio. Amazing fucking book.
I'll add it to my list! And yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I think the most important part of an undergrad degree is to just build a foundation, which is exactly what Econ/Math can do for me.
Solid post
Econ + Math would be a great background for Macro Trading (FX, Interest Rates, Emerging Markets if you speak Spanish / Portuguese).
Thanks man for key information
