What do you look for in a presidential candidate?
When you're deciding between one candidate and the other, what factors help you pick one over the other?

Girth.
Orangeness.
Openness to ideas and evidence-based decision making. I dislike zealots from both ends of the spectrum and abhor purity tests and virtue signaling (whether religious conservative or left-wing AOC/Warren/Sanders style). Find me someone who believed something, found new evidence, and changed their mind in the face of data.

Someone that has opinions but also knows that they don't know what they don't know.
Can you think of such a candidate in American politics at the Federal level? I also value those qualities, but they seem inconsistent with the requirements for success in politics nowadays.
Not currently as far as I know. I think Romney, McCain, and Jon Huntsman were to some extent such candidates; Romney as a professional investor, McCain proved that he could vote on both sides of the aisle and sponsor bipartisan legislation, and Huntsman as someone with diverse leadership experience as a CEO, Governor, and being Ambassador to several important countries like Russia, China, and Singapore. I am not fully up to date with the current pool of Democratic candidates, so will withhold judgement but nobody has stood out to me thus far.
The only thing I care about is them being Republican because Republicans are MY GUYS.
