What will happen Saturday if no spending bill?

WASHINGTON—U.S. Senate leaders were negotiating the details Friday of a must-pass measure to fund the federal government into early 2011, racing against a deadline of midnight Saturday to prevent a shutdown of government operations.

The need for a short-term spending bill comes after Democrats conceded defeat and pulled a $1.1 trillion spending package off the Senate floor late Thursday. That bill would have funded the government through Sept. 30, 2011, the end of the current fiscal year.

..........blah blah

....etc

... zzzz

The government hasn't endured a shutdown since the one that began in the waning days of 1995.

So if this doesn't pass does that mean public employees will be asked not to show up? like what significance will them not passing it by this Saturday have? Also i was checking the comments on wsj and some guy said spending is supposed to b the house not senate isn't he correct?

Rather than fund the coming month on the pay go rules the Dems are trying to fund an omnibus bill through the next fiscal year. They're doing this not to raise spending, but to pass all the measures of the health care bill funding (1 billion ~ less than 1 percent of the total) so the Reps can't defund it. They're giving the Republicans a dilemma - pass the spending bill and not defund health care like they promised, or look like assholes for shutting down the government while Congress scrabbles to get new paygo funding through.

Pure politics as usual - and as usual the American people lose. Honestly I'm so cynical at this point that if I were running for office I wouldn't vote for me.
