Where to buy a tux in NYC?

Starting to get to the age where weddings are becoming a more common occurrence, so looking to buy one that will last 5+ years rather than renting all the time.

I'm relatively fashionable / clothes-conscious in general (just no experience with tuxes) so would prefer something nicer / more niche than Suitsupply etc. Looking to spend ~$1-1.5k if that's reasonable (?) and gets me something of quality.

Let me handle this, gents -- I know what I'm doing.

To the OP: as a younger man with a penchant and adoration for proper black tie, white tie, and morning dress, I implore you to take a different route for your purchase that you may not have visualized. Unfortunately, due to many different factors that have come and gone during the past seventy to eighty years, neither black tie nor white tie are what they once were. For decades upon decades, the world's fashion designers have flooded the markets with cheap and improper substitutes for the classic black tie rig; bright colors, high-cut waistcoats, and notch-lapel, single-breasted dinner jackets with anything more than a single button have diminished the class, elegance, verve, and élan with which the dress code has been synonymous since the time of Grant and Gable. For the reasons I have mentioned, and others which you will learn for yourself, I offer the suggestion of purchasing a vintage black tie ensemble (preferably dating from before the mid 1950’s when true black tie was on its last legs) and having it tailored for your specifications by an experienced alterations tailor. I know of an excellent vintage shop in Brooklyn operated by a man named Sean Crowley; Sean is a former designer for Ralph Lauren and sells some of the finest vintage garments, including black and white tie as well as more casual pieces, and has been featured in many of the Web’s most respected style blogs. Please consider this advice with all seriousness, as it will set you in a class above your fellow attendees.

As my second piece of advice, I would also like to recommend one of my favorite websites in relation to the subject. “The Black Tie Guide” was founded by a menswear aficionado named Peter Marshall in 2011 to educate gentlemen on the how-to’s of evening attire; the rights to the Guide have since been purchased by another veteran aficionado in the craft named Sven Raphael Schneider, whose own Web blog now provides readers with the same advice. It will detail everything (there’s a lot to know) on the subject at hand, so be prepared for some reading. If you heed my advice regarding the purchase of a vintage dinner suit (what you call a tuxedo)  and having it altered, you will be able to save money on the rest of your wardrobe, so reading and familiarizing yourself with the contents of the Guide will likely be the most time consuming process involved here.

Good luck to you in your endeavors. Please send me a message if you have any questions or need any advice, and I will be happy to answer them.

Depends on where you get it from. I've seen big ranges, usually somewhere between $50 to $600.

Oh wow that’s much lower than I thought.

People don’t wear tuxes to weddings though, it’s suit and tie.
