Where to Live in NYC as a Traveling Consultant

Hey Monkeys,

I'll be starting my analyst stint at a top T2 shop in NYC this August, and am a bit overwhelmed as to options to live. I've never been in NYC before, and as I will be traveling a lot, I don't think paying $3000/month for a place near the office is really worth it.

I would really appreciate any insights on where to live - should I rent, or assuming that I'll be in NYC for the long run, purchase a property? My main factors would be primarily price, but proximity to office in FiDi would be also a factor as I work there on Fridays. Thanks in advance.
