I will be renting a portion of an apartment. After I signed the lease and paid a fee to the agent, the real estate agent requested a copy of my passport or other ID. Why would the agent request this from me?

they need to be sure that you really are the person you claim to be signing the lease. otherwise you could be doing identity theft and maybe you will wreck their apartment and disappear

I don’t understand why you think sending a passport photo is unsafe.
When I studied abroad the landlord required this. I just used some app that my university recommended and crossed out the passport number. It's so they can verify your identity. Don't give them your passport number or social though
