Will Asians follow in the steps of Jews career-wise?
There has been a lot of talk in the news media about how Asians are the new Jews based on indicators such as income, social mobility, and discrimination by elite university admissions. These indicators also indicate that Asians today look a lot like Jews in the 1950's.
After WWII, Jews began infiltrating once WASP strongholds in the Ivy League, Wall Street, and Hollywood. Today, Jews represent a majority at these institutions, especially Wall Street, which used to be predominately WASP. My question is, will Asians follow the same footsteps? If so, which industry(s) will they dominate? I don't really see any indication that Asians are going to be that powerful in finance even though there are a lot at the analyst levels, but not at the top. Maybe Silicon Valley? Jews dominated Wall Street primarily because of their population in NY, which Asians already have in SF, and SV is already 1/3 Asian.
Just to clarify, are you implying that the only reason Jews account for a large percentage of finance is because they discriminate and only hire from their own? You’re hiding behind the “people have claimed” to mask your comment, which I would assume is what you believe otherwise you wouldn’t have written it
Just what we need! Another thread about race.
Will never happen because of racism
If you ever worked in London you'd realize that many Asians are already in top roles at banks (or other firms). And these aren't just Indians, the new HK visa programs there brought many intelligent HK Chinese professionals also.
Asians are already successful in academia and top money making professions. The main differences between the Jewish path to the top and an Asian path is the degree of assimilation and willingness to assume risk.
No, I don't think so because "Asians" are fragmented culturally (i.e., multiple countries with distinct cultural differences), which makes such strong unity difficult to achieve.
Jews were different in that they all had a somewhat homogenous culture that was so distinct from everyone else, so unity within their community is strong and they always looked out for one another in a way that no other fragmented group would. I don't say this disparagingly either; I'm Latino and would love if our community looked out for each other like this.
You're speaking of Ashkenazi Jews specifically, there are a lot of cultural difference between the European Ashkenazi Jews and Sephardic and Mizrachi Jews (Jews from areas like Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, Iran, etc.). All of the classic "Jewish" stereotypes you see in the American media like doctors/lawyers/bankers, bagels, nebbishy guys, etc. are all regarding Ashkenazi Jews.
We just gonna ignore this casual 10-year necrobump?
