Working in Midtown East, living in FiDi?

I have a buyside FT offer and will be working in Midtown East by the Rockefeller Center, but my friends are working in IB and want to live in FiDi. Is a 26-31 minute commute okay? Unit will be around =$2k utilities ($1850 rent) included and has great amenities.

Should I live somewhere closer to my office? Is it possible to find similar priced units closer? I’m under the impression that the neighborhoods around Midtown East are highly expensive for the amenities I want (in building laundry facilities, a gym, 24 hr doorman) to justify a shorter commute

Living in FiDi while working in Midtown East is definitely manageable with a 26-31 minute commute, especially if you're comfortable with the trade-off between commute time and the amenities you're getting for the price. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some considerations:

  1. FiDi Pros:

    • FiDi offers units with great amenities like in-building laundry, gyms, and 24-hour doormen, which are harder to find at a similar price point in Midtown East.
    • Studios in FiDi typically range from $2.5k-$3.5k, but with roommates, you can bring your share down to around $2k or less, as you've found.
  2. Midtown East Housing:

    • Midtown East, especially near Grand Central, is known for being expensive. For a unit with the amenities you want, prices are likely to exceed your $2k budget.
    • Murray Hill and Gramercy are popular neighborhoods for young professionals working in Midtown. Studios here range from $2k-$3k, and with roommates, you could find something in the $1.5k-$2.25k range. These areas are closer to your office and have good nightlife options.
  3. Commute Considerations:

    • A 26-31 minute commute is reasonable by NYC standards, especially if you're saving on rent and getting better amenities.
    • Long Island City (LIC) could be another option to consider. It's just 1-2 train stops from Midtown, offers lower costs of living compared to Manhattan, and has newer buildings with great amenities. However, nightlife in LIC is limited compared to FiDi or Midtown.
  4. Final Thoughts:

    • If you value amenities and a lower rent, staying in FiDi is a solid choice, especially since the commute is not overly long.
    • If you prioritize being closer to work, explore Murray Hill, Gramercy, or even LIC for options that might fit your budget with roommates.

Ultimately, it depends on your priorities—whether you value a shorter commute or better amenities for the price.
