WSO's Formatting

Is it just me or do others think that WSO's formatting is a bit irksome and childish?

We represent some of the most elite in formatting - and yet in our own little oasis we are sloppy with formatting.

Here is what I would suggest.

1) See over there where it says "Forum Topics?" Any link there inexplicably shifts from the quite attractive Helvetica/Verdana style font to a font written in small caps in which any of the large caps appear bolded relative to the rest of the word, giving the appearance that whatever analyst typed it accidentally hit ctrl+B instead of ctrl+V when they were trying to insert that fancy accent aigu.

What precisely is the rationale for this font shift? Wouldn't using the same font as other linked words (ex. above where it says Wall Street Oasis >> Content etc) work just as well? It is clear they are forum topics because it says "forum topics" above them so I don't buy the "we have to distinguish topics from links" argument.

Recommendation: Change all fonts to the standard Helvetica/Verdana style - or even better, WSO hire a good typesetter to custom make a WSO font that we can buy to use in our resumes - and simply use bold and non-bold, and if you use any caps, only use ALL caps - see HBS resume template for example.

2) Our logo - now I realize that the 'monkey' analogy is quite widespread and indeed funny - but to some extent we degrade ourselves by sticking so closely to the metaphor. Perhaps something more subtle would up the class of this establishment - like a statue of a golden monkey, or a monkey climbing a tower.

Recommendation: Consider other logos which would enhance the curb appeal of the site and be less degrading.

3) Clip art - NO ONE in banking uses clip art with the exception maybe of Raymond James. The words in the buttons for "company research" and "modeling" etc. would suffice just fine.

Recommendation: Don't treat this like a 7th grade science project.

Actually, I liked the site better when it was bare bones. The fancy formatting shifts focus away from INFORMATION to presentation. In summary:

blastoisecan we get all our fonts changed to wing dings just for 30 min one day?

most people are on here enough that I doubt it would make navigation any harder. just reading the content

This is hilarious Op: Do you work in the production department?

Personally I prefer minimal formatting to keep the focus on content

  1. Font changes coming - we will be continually improving the site aesthetics. I agree with you on the blocks and overall fonts need consistency / refresh. We also will be formatting the tables, forums, etc so they are cleaner and more polished

  2. Logo not changing anytime soon - see below for logos from our past if you want real cartoonish

  3. I love the tiles and I think they do a good job of conveying what is behind them both visually and with text. And the bottom line is they are working. Over 2x the amount of traffic to those pages than before which helps WSO go round.

Thanks WSO! You guys know I love this site :) On your point 3, love the evidence based policy making and I agree with you 100%. Those logos - they now almost have a retro throwback Webcrawler/Netscape Navigator-era feel to them - maybe bring them out for an anniversary or something? How long has this party been going?

And now for a rare moment of complete frankness - I know I talk a lot of shit but I really do like helping people out and genuinely like to see people succeed, ask anyone who's ever PM'd me or chatted with me live for advice. Most of my posts are a bit (very) facetious but at the end of the day I'm happy to help out anyone who deserves it. I am a complete formatting dork and it's a bit of an obsession...but at the end of the day my work at least looks good (even if the substance is shite...)

As for the point on getting laid...will have to talk to the gf of 1.5 yrs about that one...

All my love frgna

New fonts are looking sweet! Props WSO!

Small edit - 'highest ranked content' is still in the old font (using macbook pro and safari).
