Yahoo Hacked Big Time

It's been revealed that half a billion Yahoo users have had their email and password info stolen in an absolutely massive hack.

In July, 161 million people worldwide used Yahoo email on personal computers, a 30 percent decline from the same time in 2014, when the breach first occurred.

Another interesting piece to note:

Yahoo blamed the hack on a “state-sponsored actor” – meaning a hacker working on behalf of a foreign government.

Keep in mind the hack happened in 2014 but has just now been discovered by Yahoo. So, Yahoo's user base has drastically dropped since 2014 (shocking, I know), and on top of that a massive hack has occurred.

Will this affect the acquisition? Any ideas as to what mysterious foreign govt backed the hack?

I don't think it will affect the acquisition, nor is that what's most interesting about this situation. What's most interesting is how this situation relates to the broader issue of global cyber crime and cyber warfare. Whether it be private- or public-sector cyber attacks, this has become one of the most interesting issues of our time.

It is interesting to think about. I talked to an insurance higher-up a while ago and he said that they were getting cyber-attacked several times a day, which makes cyber insurance necessary (I didn't even know that existed until that day).

Another major target for cyber attacks? Political figures

I stopped using yahoo when they started demanding phone numbers for account creation, not a chance yahoo! Not a chance!

I also hate that they stopped letting people make those cute avatars for yahoo answers.
