Big Blow to Diesel Cars

WSJ Interesting article here about German cities being able to ban older, and in the future, all diesel cars on city streets. Obviously a big backbone of the German economy is their auto industry, which produces many cars that run on diesel fuel.

What I want to know is when something like this will/can happen in America? Listen, I'm no tree hugger, but I'm also not a "drill baby drill" guy either. So I'm not expecting there to be much, if any, support for this kind of measure in the United States. However, with German auto companies having to invest more in cleaner, and possibly more fuel efficient cars, will American automakers do anything in response?
