[Commercial Banking] Advice on developing network as a credit analyst.
I see a lot of posts on here with regards to the salary and career progression on commercial banking, but not a lot on the actual how's of developing new business and the sales side.
I've been a credit analyst (would prefer not to specify exact title) at a regional bank (Commercial & Industial focus) for the last 4+ years. I'm in a small satellite office where we effectively have a few commercial loan officers that generate large amounts of new customers/business (I'll refer to them as BDOs or business development officers) but a couple who do not generally bring in new customers. I have sought the advice of the highest revenue generating BDO at our group who has said their largest challenge currently is bringing in adequate deals to meet the number of officers we have in our group as not all of the officers (especially the junior ones) bring in revenue.
I'd like to get to a BDO role one day (5-10 year timeline) and this past year I have been actively working hard on establishing a network, mostly younger folks like myself via networking events with other junior CPA staff, and looking at nonprofit boards that would be helpful for me to join (and that I would be genuinely interested in serving on).
I would like to show that I am capable of stepping up and being promoted to a junior officer role reporting under that BDO without the concern that I would just be an additional head that he has to help meet the scorecard goals of without potential to show that I could bring in new business myself.
Given that I don't have my own book of business, I wanted to work more on expanding my network via CPAs and other relevant professionals (cold calling seems more appropriate only if you have an existing book of business where clients can vouch for you). What I'm hoping is that if I can't at least bring in direct new business, if I could introduce the BDOs I work for with other new accountants (ie COIs/referral sources) that would at least prove I have the ability to stand on my own. But I'm hoping to get some thoughts from others on here within the commercial banking forum/industry on how else I can help with expand my own professional network and what I could do within a 1-year timeline (next year) to show where I can go.
A couple of other things I should note - currently, I'm in a junior sales development training program at my bank which has been incredibly helpful in learning how to pitch the bank, discuss a deal, and in general expand my capacity into a more sales level type role. As well, I've been trying to engage as much as possible in "internal" networking events that could potential lend themselves into external networking opportunities (ie, employee resource groups that might end up hosting network events, etc).
