Maybe a smart move if you have enough people in said group as references, considering headhunters filter you based on group. But if your deals and experience are legit then don't see how you would necessarily be caught.

I'm surprised he got the offer - wouldn't that mean he would have also lied during the interview about his specific role and responsibilities when he got the walk me through your resume/deals question? You'd think that this is a VERY easy thing for a PE shop to confirm with a phone call to the BB.
I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt that he's not 'the guy'. I don't think anyone is stupid enough to announce this if they were the culprit.
