Public Service/Government

Curious if anyone has ever considered about transitioning from the private sector to the public sector. There's headlines every election cycle about the revolving door between Washington and Wall Street but I'm curious if anybody has ever done it on a local level.

I doubt that I am qualified for it, but there's a City Treasurer job open where I live and I'm intrigued by the idea. I have experience in public finance and know what the job entails and have always really really enjoyed the nuances of public administration when I've worked on project finance in the past.

Has anyone ever flirted with this idea or actually done it? Pros/Cons? Things to consider (besides the reduction in compensation)?
