2 years of prop trading experience. How can I transition into PE (or even feasible?)

Hey all,

As the title implies, I'm a guy looking to potentially transition from Trading -> Private Equity. I'm very ignorant of this side of the industry so please bear with me here.

Long story short, I'm needed back home and trading jobs there are non-existent. I've obviously considered other alternative industries I'm qualified for (software, data science, engineering, etc) but I think PE caught my eye the most and ideally, I'd like to stay in finance. From my limited understanding though, it seems you generally need 1-3 years of banking exp before getting your foot in the door for PE? I wasn't sure if my technical background (stats, programming) would be impressive but irrelevant as it seems like modeling/research skills are far more valued.

Quick background on me: I'm 2 years out of school, went to a target, studied engineering. I spent my 1st year working at Chicago prop trading firm - first half in trading, second half in quant research/development. My 2nd year, I moved to a NYC trading firm (equities focused) and played a similar, hybrid role there. I'm pretty well versed with finance, particularly with the equities market.

I'm a pretty fast learner and have some leeway in terms of time to prep and educate myself. Do I stand a chance at all transitioning to this new field and if so, how should I go about it? Or, would I pretty much have to start all over as if I'm out of undergrad -> banking -> PE?

Thanks in advance for the advice!
