5Y international PE experience - advice for job search in the US

Long story short, I spent the last 5 years working in a SEA MM PE (I went straight to PE without IB experience, outside of one summer internship I did at a boutique in London) and due to circumstances, now I am in the US. I have work authorization so visa isn't an issue. I graduated from a top 10 UK school with an engineering degree.

My question is: what should be the best way to approach the job market here? I understand that it is highly unlikely any PE house here will be interested in a candidate with international experience. With 5 years of experience on my back, do I stand a chance if I go for an entry-level position at an IB (for example) or should I try for something else? MBA is out of the picture for me.

There is also something I noticed while I was job searching on LinkedIn. There are many postings by recruiters for PE professional with a few years of experience for a specific starting date in the summer. Should I even bother with those LinkedIn postings?

I have to admit I am not familiar with the recruitment season for PE over here. I've read they do it to bring in IB analysts, but how does it work for PE professionals with some experience?

Appreciate your help

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you might approach the job market in the US with your international PE experience:

  1. Leverage Your Unique Background: Your international experience in SEA MM PE can be a strong selling point. Emphasize your diverse perspective, deal experience, and any cross-border transactions you may have worked on.

  2. Networking: This is key in the finance industry. Reach out to alumni from your UK school, connect with professionals in the industry, and attend industry events. Your work authorization is a significant advantage, so make sure to highlight that.

  3. Consider Boutique Firms: Given your experience in a boutique firm in London, you might find more interest from boutique investment banks or PE firms in the US. They often value diverse experience and may have a more flexible hiring approach.

  4. Recruitment Cycles: While it's true that PE firms often hire analysts from IB, they also look for experienced professionals. The recruitment season can vary, but LinkedIn postings are a valid avenue to explore. Apply to those positions that align with your experience, and be ready to discuss how your background can add value to a US firm.

  5. Direct Applications: Apply directly to firms that interest you. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your relevant experience and how it can translate to the US market.

  6. Recruiters: Engage with recruiters who specialize in PE placements. They can provide insights into the market and may have access to opportunities that are not publicly advertised.

  7. Entry-Level Positions: With 5 years of experience, you might be overqualified for entry-level roles. Instead, target positions that require 2-5 years of experience where you can bring immediate value.

  8. LinkedIn Postings: Don't dismiss LinkedIn postings. They can be a good source of opportunities, especially those with specific start dates, as they indicate immediate hiring needs.

Remember, persistence is key, and your international experience can be a valuable asset in a globalized market. Keep an open mind and be prepared to articulate how your skills and background align with the needs of US firms. Good luck with your job search!
