Ares PE Europe

Anyone has any insights into Ares PE in Europe? They seem to have languished for a while and now done bunch of deals over the last 2 years. They’ve been having mixed performance historically but heard that’s because of energy exposure which they wound down.

Anyone got any insights, also around wlb / culture / comp?

I know they have recently built up the Special Opps team under James Kim which falls under the PE umbrella. Interestingly, Special Opps has had better returns than the pure PE platform and their latest fundraise was crazy vs. the target.
On the pure PE side they haven’t necessarily been the most active in Europe, they have done a few deals in Healthcare and looked at buy and builds in that space but the actual track record is rather light.

Thanks, that's very helpful. What do you think about their investment style? They seem to be doing a lot of growth style which should be at odds with what they are doing on the Spec Sits side... seems a bit counterintuitive? Also, do you have any thoughts on portfolio quality? With all these high-growth investments not sure how they are positioned for success in the near-term?
