Associate 2 - asking for more autonomy/responsibility
Hi all -
Posting under anon. given subject matter.
For background, I started in a new UMM PE role (from IB) about 9 months ago as an Aso 1 (now Aso 2). Am generally liking the work and team so far.
The one thing I'm struggling is judging what level of responsibility I should be taking on.
When working with most of the principals/partners, I feel like I have a fair bit of autonomy in terms of sourcing new opps; during a deal I'm leading a good selection of external calls with advisors or the counterparty, I'm presenting the valuation/numbers in ICs etc. - that is all great and something I continue to like.
However, there is one principal who I've been working a lot with lately who generally takes a more 'hand-on' approach to things. So to give a couple of examples: (i) when it comes to sending emails (including admin emails for scheduling calls, sending a list of names on the deal team etc.) they want to be CC'd on everything, (ii) quite prone though not 100% of the time to taking my ideas and presenting them in meetings rather than passing the mic, (iii) keeps on excluding me from key calls such as during final termsheet negotiations or calls internally where key decisions are being made (it will just be them and the lead partner on those), (iv) does not want to hand over any autonomy when it comes to running various diligence workstreams.
To be honest it's a little jarring and quite frustrating: I think I've always been used/lucky to have been trusted to 'get along with things', and mentioned this a lot during all my interviews here to 'test' the point on cultural fit. Also appreciate it's not 1 individual thing, but it's the package put together that has gotten me frustrated. I believe at least on some of these points I'm not alone internally (have discussed in passing with another associate who has alluded to having similar thoughts).
So my question is: am I simply being unreasonable in terms of wanting more autonomy/responsibility at my level, and should pipe down, or is this unusual and any tips on how I should be trying to address more pro-actively? In Reddit terms, AITA?
Any thoughts welcome! Big thanks to all you lovely people in advance!
