Attire for women in IB/PE?

Hi all,

I'm a girl and I'm starting my summer internship in PE in NYC. Was wondering if any of the ladies on here had recommendations for clothing & general attire, best shoes for the office / heels? I have a few pantsuits in black & navy, but I wasn't sure if there were any recommendations for brands, where to get dresses etc?

Would love any input! :)

Women have become more casual so you’ll probably be able to get away with more normal shirts after the first week. I think dresses / pants / button up tops / plain blouses work

When I mean women have become more casual, I mean both men and women

Hi - good luck on the internship!I would recommend going with really comfortable, relative cheaper black heels that are catered to the "old-lady" demographic. No one can tell and even the most expensive heels go to shit pretty fast. I personally like the Naturalizer Teresa pump. I also wear loafers a lot, and those I would recommend eventually spluring on a nice pair but for your internship anything should be fine. I also splurge a bit more on tops personally because I love silk shirts from places like equipment, vince, theory, l'agence etc. (they're also always on sale) Pants/dresses I typically go with theory for that as well. Have a few from Banana and Aritzia as well for cheaper alternatives (think I wore mostly those brands + Ann Taylor when I was an intern). TJ Maxx also has a ton of these brands at good deals

Sam Edelman had the best loafers for a nice price. I personally would get like 3 pairs of pants you really like the fit of / can tuck in shirt into / can sit in all day (one blue gray and black) and rotate though. Ann Taylor randomly hits on dresses and tops, and Saks off fifth has a ton of dresses

good luck this summer!! it’s really going to depend on your office culture and what everyone else wears. wear your best for the first day (button down/blouse, dress pants, blazer, and heels/loafers) and see what the other women wear. I wore everything from a simple top, slacks and heels to a skirt with a body suit blazer and heels. hell I even wore nice dress sneakers a lot of the days because I walked to the office and everyone else wore them. where you shop is also going to depend a ton of your build. for me i’m short with a fairly broad muscular build so places that offer petite sizing are ideal. i’d start with j. crew, ann taylor loft (can be old ladyish but they make a mean blazer for the price) and banana republic. i’d also look at zara and aritzia for a few more modern/fun pieces. Nordstrom rack can also have some gems and you can get some great pieces at a discount. i’d recommend you get 3-5 bottoms, 5-6 tops, 2-3 blazers (some combo of black, grey and navy is really all you need) and then two pairs of shoes. you can rotate that all through the summer and you should be good to go! obviously the more you get, the less laundry you’ll have to do lol but you can more than get by with that rotation. also don’t sleep on sites like poshmark for getting unworn pieces from higher end brands. i’ve gotten a few nicer brand tops/pants, new with tags, for less than half of retail.
