Background / Reference Check

Hey guys,

I just had my phone interview and am awaiting their decision on whether or not they'd like to bring me in for a face-to-face interview. I was just curious (1) how thorough VC firms are on background / reference check on their potential employees, and (2) usually at what stage of interview (or even after hire), it is performed.

Though a firm hasn't asked me for references yet since I just finished a phone interview with them, but was just curious about this because I don't know when I need to start informing my references that they should prepare for calls/emails from a firm.

I'm particularly interested in how it's done at small VC firms (total # of people working 5)

I heard that some small firms do not even bother with any of these checks - is that true?

Thanks in advance.

1) My firm did a BG check on potential employees after giving out offers. I know they ended up not hiring somebody because she did not pass her background check... 2) They did not do reference checks, although other firms I interviewed with only did this right before they were ready to give me an offer (after final rounds)

In summary, a firm probably will not spend time doing BG or reference checks until they're ready to give you an offer.
