Bonus Buyout from IB to PE
Do PE firms typically make their employees whole when transitioning mid year before bonus payout? Have seen a ton of ppl leave in between bonuses whether it be a March leave for analysts or a November departure for associates
I would most definitely ask for this, people don't quite realize you can negotiate a signing bonus that's sizable. I got a decent one because I used the MBA debt as "reason" but I have heard of one of my colleagues using the missed whole bonus as a reason.
For yours, this was the first job post-MBA and (I’m assuming) in PE? How much were you able to negotiate for / how common is it for this to be part of post-MBA comp? I’m only familiar with tuition repayment for sponsored / returning pre-MBA associates
Nope, not first job post-MBA, I did a consulting stint of about 18 months in between. Negotiated mid-five figures (half of the outstanding debt).
Very rare but not unheard of. I’ve only ever seen it happen when the fund insists you start early and forego your bonus (eg your bonus is paid in July but the firm needs you to start in Feb). If you’re leaving early of your own volition much less likely.
Join a MF PE shop out of banking where the bonus cycle between the two was different and negotiated for a stub bonus payment for my “accrued” banking bonus so that I wasn’t leaving $$ on the table in the switch. This was an off-cycle immediate start position
Did they pay similar to what you would have made during bonus time? (Minus the time you didn’t accrue)
Surprisingly they used the expected bonus $$ amount I proposed and then prorated based on the date I quit (ended up being ~5 months worth)
I got bought out 75% of my expected annual bonus since I left 75% of the way into the bonus year. Buyside shop to another buyside shop.
We don’t “buy out” deferred comp, but to make new joiners whole we pay a full year bonus irrespective of actual start date.
Fair to assume it's not worth asking after I've already signed like a year ago? My current firm does calendar year bonuses. I got this next gig during on-cycle for context
