Co-Investing

While researching private equity comps and other benefits to private equity. I’ve heard people talk about co-investing and how if you work at a private equity firm you get access to exclusive investments. If a PE firm consistently perform 15-30 percent or better then having access to that at a young age is awesome. How common is this? Is this a normal practice? Are associates allowed to co-invest? If you save and co-invest 50% of your income then your set to have 10s of millions of dollars by the time your promoted to principal. Is this realistic? What are your experiences with co-investing?
