If you think of everyone company with a continuum of value from "nascent" to "mature", IPOs are happening farther along the continuum towards "mature", and so it's not really anything new per-se... it's just that to invest at the same level of maturity these days, that has to be in the private markets context. So it's kind of that to get the same business profile, HFs kind of have to move into private investments, because maybe 20 years ago that same profile would be public more often. Oversimplification but a good framework.

 

Just curious though. Do crossover funds have different vehicles to invest in public and private companies or is it done from the same vehicle?
