Fired from PE internship. Got new offer. MD called new PE firm and blackballed me.
I was recently fired from my first ever internship. When I began my internship, I told my MD about the next internship I'd do.
I had another offer lined up and confirmed (signed contract + completed background check) for the fall in PE, and suddenly, 4 months later, the firm opened up a job posting for a new intern (opened up my spot) and then called me and told me they forgot to ask for references and asked for my previous employer's contact - then rescinded my offer.
Is this common in PE...?

It sounds like they called your former MD, not the other way around? Do you have any reason to believe that’s not what happened? Could’ve been as they said, or could’ve been any other person at your prior internship. I don’t think an MD cares at all what you do next unless you did something egregious to get fired
They opened up the posting before I had the chance to share the reference.. also very random for it to happen simultaneously.. they hire 3 interns every season, and I know the 2 other interns (they didn't renege).

It's next to impossible for an intern to get fired... for an firm to do this it sounds like you did something quite bad. PE is a small world though, so if you did something terrible it's not unheard of that other firms would find out about it.

That's not great but seems odd they'd call other shops about it. It's more a stupid mistake than something malicious
